Origin Story

It all began with 1 family. Oscar told our founder he had to pay $150 for a cab to take him to an ICE appointment because he feared being deported and had no other way. Later he had to explain to his 8-year-old daughter Iza why they had no food. When the Covid tsunami broke we remembered him and Claribel, who was pregnant with a 1 year old, and ICE was threatening to deport on her due date.

We pivoted overnight to food distribution and within days our phones exploded with parents requesting food. In a bold & beautiful combustion of solidarity our numbers were given out over the radio, in grocery stores and Facebook.

We had dreamed of addressing food insecurity for 200 people (fate laughed!) and instead within weeks we were supporting 600, then 1,000, then 3,000; till now we support more than 8,000 Black and Brown familias who are asylum seekers or are undocumented!

Our sueño is to go out of business because immigrant families are community-organized and sustainable.
